That Sun-Kissed Pasadena Glow: Balayage vs. Traditional Highlights

That Sun-Kissed Pasadena Glow: Balayage vs. Traditional Highlights

I can't tell you how many times a client sits in my chair, phone in hand, showing me a picture of perfectly blended, beachy hair. They'll say, "I want this, but the last time I got highlights, I ended up with stripes."

Actually, I can tell you. Last month alone, I had this exact conversation with at least five women. And it almost always comes down to the same thing: the difference between painting color and just applying it.

Here in Pasadena, we're blessed with gorgeous California sun. We see it glinting off the windows at City Hall and making the gardens at the Huntington look even more vibrant. That same light can either expose harsh, stripy highlights or make beautifully painted balayage look like you were born with it.

That natural, lived-in look is what I specialize in, and after over 30 years doing this, I've learned it's all about the art of hand-painting.

Why Balayage Is Actually Different

The word "balayage" is French and it means "to sweep." That's really the perfect description. When we do a balayage service at Bokaos Aveda, we're literally sweeping lightener onto the surface of your hair with a brush and a paddle.

It's completely different from traditional foils.

With foils, we weave sections of hair, paint them with lightener, and wrap them in foil. This creates a very uniform, defined pattern of lightness from root to tip. It's great for a bold, all-over blonde look. But it also creates that distinct line as your hair grows out, which means you're back in the salon for touch-ups way more frequently.

Balayage is freehand. No foils. I look at your hair's natural movement, your face shape, and where the sun would naturally hit it. Then I custom-paint the lightener, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends and feathering it softly toward the root. This creates a seamless blend with no harsh lines, so it grows out beautifully and naturally.

I learned this the hard way early in my career. I had a client named Maria who came in wanting that beachy, sun-kissed look. I was still pretty new to balayage and I got too heavy-handed with the lightener near her roots. When she came back eight weeks later, she didn't have soft regrowth. She had a weird demarcation line that looked obvious.

I felt terrible. I fixed it for free and really studied the technique after that. Now I know exactly how to feather the color so it grows out seamlessly. Maria still comes to see me, actually. That was almost fifteen years ago.

The Products We Use Actually Matter

One of the biggest concerns clients have is damage. We've all seen or experienced hair that feels like straw after lightening.

That's why we use Aveda's hair color exclusively, which is up to 96% naturally derived. Their Enlightener isn't your typical harsh bleach. It's formulated with conditioning botanical oils that help protect the hair while it lifts.

This means we can achieve beautiful, bright blondes without destroying the health and shine of your hair. It's a core part of why I work at this salon. The products align with how I want to treat my clients' hair.

This is especially important for clients from San Marino to La Cañada Flintridge who want to be blonde but also want their hair to feel like hair, not damaged straw.

My client Jennifer is a perfect example. She'd been getting traditional highlights at another salon for years. Her hair was breaking off at the ends and felt fried. When she came to me, we had to cut off about three inches of damage before we could even start coloring.

We transitioned her to balayage using Aveda products, and within six months, her hair felt completely different. She told me, "I forgot my hair could feel soft. I thought this was just what blonde hair felt like."

Finding Your Perfect Look

"Balayage" isn't one single service. During your consultation, we'll figure out exactly what you want and choose the right approach.

Full balayage is for you if you want a significant change and brightness all over. We'll paint sections throughout your entire head to create a dramatic yet natural-looking transformation. It's a longer appointment, usually three to four hours, but the results are stunning.

Partial balayage is perfect for adding brightness around your face and on the top layers. It's a great way to introduce dimension or refresh existing balayage without committing to a full head of color. This is usually about two hours.

Babylights are incredibly fine, delicate highlights that mimic the subtle color of a child's hair. We often combine babylights with balayage to break up the root area for an even softer blend.

Our pricing is based on the stylist's level of experience, so we can find an option that fits your budget and hair goals.

Taking Care of Your Color in Southern California

Living in Pasadena means we have to think differently about hair care. That sunshine we love can be brutal on color-treated hair.

The sun's UV rays cause color to fade or turn brassy over time. That's why aftercare is so important. I always tell clients to think of it like sunscreen for your hair. Using a product like Aveda's Color Control Leave-In Treatment is honestly non-negotiable here if you want your color to last.

Another challenge is hard water. Some neighborhoods in our area have water with high mineral content, which builds up on your hair and makes blonde tones look dull or even greenish.

I learned this with my client Rachel who lives in La Cañada. She came back six weeks after a beautiful balayage looking panicked. Her hair had this weird greenish cast to it. I knew immediately it was mineral buildup from her water at home.

We did a clarifying treatment in the salon and I sent her home with a chelating shampoo to use once a week. Problem solved. Now she knows to watch for it.

For clients struggling with frizz after coloring, we often recommend a keratin treatment to seal the cuticle, lock in the color, and make daily styling so much easier.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

First comes the consultation. This is the most important part. We'll talk about your hair history, your lifestyle, and your ultimate vision. We look at photos together and create a plan.

I always ask about your daily routine too. If you're someone who throws your hair in a ponytail every day for work, we'll approach the color differently than if you wear it down and styled most of the time.

Next, we mix your custom Aveda color and begin the painting process. It's relaxing and artistic. Once the lightener has processed, we'll bring you to the shampoo bowl for the final, crucial step: the toner.

Toning is what perfects the color. It cancels out any unwanted brassiness and gives you that perfect sandy, golden, or cool beige blonde you wanted. It also adds incredible shine.

The best part of balayage is how gracefully it grows out. You won't need a touch-up for three to four months, or even longer. Many clients just come in for a toner or gloss every six to eight weeks to keep the color fresh and vibrant between full balayage appointments.

My client Sarah gets a full balayage twice a year and comes in for glosses in between. She said, "This is the lowest maintenance my hair has ever been and it looks the best it's ever looked. I should have done this years ago."
