Brazilian Blowout vs Yuko vs Botanical Treatment: How We Choose in Pasadena
BokaosShare
Almost every week at Bokaos, someone sits in our chair and says they want a Brazilian Blowout, and almost every week we end up having a different conversation. Sometimes they actually want a Yuko perm. Sometimes a botanical smoothing treatment is what their hair can handle. And sometimes they walked in asking for keratin because that is the word they heard from a friend, but what they describe wanting is something else entirely.
The confusion is fair. Smoothing services have been marketed under so many overlapping names in the last fifteen years that even our newer stylists at Bokaos go through extra training to keep the terminology straight. Here is how we actually break it down during a consultation in Pasadena, what each service does to your hair, and how we decide which one belongs on your head.
What A Brazilian Blowout Actually Does
A Brazilian Blowout is a smoothing treatment that coats the hair shaft with a liquid keratin solution, which is then sealed in with heat from a flat iron. The result is hair that is smoother, shinier, more frizz-resistant, and faster to blow dry. It does not chemically restructure your hair. It does not break the disulfide bonds the way a perm or a relaxer does. It is a surface treatment that lasts roughly ten to twelve weeks depending on how often you wash and what shampoo you use.
At Bokaos, the clients who do well with a Brazilian Blowout usually fall into one of three categories. They have wavy or curly hair and want to cut their styling time in half. They have frizz from Pasadena's dry heat or the marine layer rolling in from the coast and they want a calmer texture without giving up their natural pattern. Or they have color-treated hair that is reading frizzy and dull and they want shine back without committing to a permanent change.
What a Brazilian Blowout will not do: it will not turn curly hair pin straight. If a stylist tells you it will, get up and leave. The point of the service is to soften and smooth, not to flatten. Clients who come in expecting stick-straight hair from a Brazilian Blowout walk out disappointed, and that is a consultation failure on the salon's part.
What A Yuko Perm Is And Why It Is Different
The Yuko perm is the other smoothing service we offer at Bokaos, and it is not a Brazilian Blowout. It is a Japanese straightening system that actually does chemically restructure the hair. It breaks the bonds, smooths the hair into a new shape with heat, and then reforms the bonds in that new configuration. The result is straight. Truly straight. And it is permanent on the hair it is applied to, meaning the new growth that comes in will still be your natural texture, but the treated hair stays straight until it is cut off.
A Yuko is a four to five hour service in our Pasadena salon, and it is performed by our Advanced or Master level stylists because the timing, tension, and thermal control required are not beginner skills. At Bokaos, we use a four-level training system (Level 1, Level 2, Advanced, Master), and the Yuko is reserved for stylists who have completed advanced technical education in chemical restructuring services. This is not a service you rush, and it is not a service we assign to someone still building their foundation.
You cannot wash your hair for three days after. You cannot put it up in a ponytail or tuck it behind your ears for the first 72 hours, because the hair will hold whatever shape you bend it into during that window. We turn down Yuko bookings regularly when we can tell during the consultation that the client is not the right candidate, either because their hair is too compromised from previous bleaching, or because they are not ready for the maintenance.
Who actually does well with a Yuko? Clients with thick, coarse, resistant hair who want true straightness and are tired of fighting their texture every day. We have clients in San Marino, La CaƱada, and Sierra Madre who have been getting Yuko touch-ups with us for over a decade. Once they found it, they never went back.
When We Recommend The Botanical Treatment Instead
There is a third option that gets overlooked because it does not have the brand-name recognition of the other two: our botanical treatment. This is the service we recommend most often for clients whose hair is already compromised, whether from color, heat, or previous chemical services.
The botanical treatment is plant-based, reinforces the hair from the inside, and adds smoothness and shine without any straightening agent. It is not as dramatic in result as a Brazilian Blowout, and nothing like a Yuko. But for fine hair, bleached hair, hair that has been through a color correction in the last six months, or hair that is just exhausted, it is often the right call. It buys the hair time to recover before a more intensive service is even on the table.
As an Aveda concept salon since 1995, this kind of plant-based, restorative approach is part of how we think about every service. We are not going to push you into a chemical smoothing treatment if your hair is not ready for one. That is one of the reasons our color correction specialists and smoothing specialists work so closely together. If a client comes in for a Brazilian Blowout but their hair history points to bond damage, we slow down.
How We Decide During The Consultation
Every smoothing service at Bokaos starts with a consultation, and we do not skip this step. The conversation usually covers six things: your natural texture, your color history, how much time you currently spend styling, your tolerance for chemical processes, your maintenance habits, and what you actually want the hair to look and feel like day to day.
A client with virgin curly hair who washes twice a week and wants softer waves is a different conversation from a client with double-processed blonde who blows dry every morning and wants frizz gone. The first might be a great Brazilian Blowout candidate. The second might need a botanical treatment first, then revisit smoothing in two months once the bond integrity is back.
We also talk honestly about time commitment. A Brazilian Blowout at Bokaos lasts about three months and requires a two to three hour appointment. A Yuko is four to five hours in the chair, but you are only doing touch-ups on new growth two or three times a year after the initial service. The botanical treatment is shorter per visit but you will come back more frequently because the smoothing effect is gentler and fades sooner. The right service depends on your texture, your color history, and what you want to wake up to.
Ready For The Conversation
If you have been looking up smoothing treatments in Pasadena and feeling more confused after every article you read, that is normal. The category is messy on purpose because the brand marketing has been intentionally vague for years. The way to cut through it is to come in, let us look at your hair in person, and have the consultation before you book the service.
Call Bokaos at our One Colorado Square location in Old Town Pasadena, or book a consultation online. We will tell you which of the three services your hair actually needs, and if the answer is none of them right now, we will tell you that too.
