Brazilian Blowout in Pasadena: Who It's For (And When We Say No)
BokaosShare
The question comes up almost every week at the front desk. A client books a blowdry, sits down in the chair, and asks our stylist if a Brazilian Blowout would finally fix the frizz they fight with every morning. Sometimes they've already googled it on the drive over from South Pasadena. Sometimes a friend in San Marino just got one and won't stop talking about it. Sometimes they had a keratin treatment somewhere else two years ago and want to know if this is the same thing.
The honest answer is: it depends on your hair. Brazilian Blowouts are one of the most requested smoothing services at Bokaos, and they work beautifully for the right hair type. But we turn people away from this service more than any other, because it isn't a universal fix. Here's how we decide who's a good candidate, and what the appointment actually looks like at our Old Town Pasadena location.
What a Brazilian Blowout Actually Does
A Brazilian Blowout is a smoothing treatment that coats the hair shaft with a protein-based solution, then seals it in with heat using a flat iron. The result is hair that's smoother, shinier, easier to blow out at home, and less prone to frizz in humidity. It does not permanently straighten the hair. Curls and waves are still there. They just behave better.
In our chairs, most clients get ten to twelve weeks before they're due back, depending on how often you wash, what shampoo you use, and how much sun and chlorine the hair sees. Pasadena summers and pool season can shorten that window. Clients in Altadena and La Cañada Flintridge who swim regularly tend to come back closer to the ten-week mark.
What it isn't: a Yuko perm. Yuko is a true permanent straightening service that breaks and reforms the bonds in the hair. Brazilian Blowout sits on top of the hair and gradually washes out. They solve different problems, and we offer both, but we never substitute one for the other.
Who It Works Best For
The ideal candidate has frizz-prone hair with a natural wave or loose curl, a thick or coarse texture, and a daily routine that involves blowdrying or air-drying and constantly losing the battle to humidity. If you spend forty-five minutes blowdrying your hair every morning and the second you walk outside it puffs back up, you are exactly who this service was designed for.
Clients with very fine hair are a harder call. The protein coating can sometimes feel heavy on fine strands, weighing the hair down rather than smoothing it. We address this during the consultation, which is custom to your texture and density. Sometimes a Botanical Treatment or a series of steam treatments serves fine-haired clients better than a full Brazilian Blowout.
Clients with tightly coiled hair textures usually want different results than what this service delivers. A Brazilian Blowout will loosen and smooth the curl pattern, but if you want to keep your curls intact and just reduce frizz, we'll steer you toward our botanical treatments instead.
When We Recommend Holding Off
There are situations where we tell clients to wait or reconsider. If you've recently had a heavy bleach service (a full head foil or a corrective color that took multiple sessions), your hair needs time to recover before adding a chemical smoothing treatment on top. Our color team waits four to six weeks after a major lightening service before scheduling a Brazilian Blowout.
If you're pregnant or nursing, we ask you to skip this service. The same goes for anyone with a sensitive scalp condition or recent scalp procedure.
If your hair is already very damaged (snapping when wet, gummy when conditioner is applied, midshaft breakage), we'll recommend a series of in-salon repair treatments before considering any smoothing service. There's no smoothing treatment that fixes damage. It only masks it temporarily, and then the damage gets worse.
What the Appointment Looks Like at Bokaos
Plan on roughly two to three hours, depending on your hair length and density. We start with a thorough consultation tailored to your texture and goals. If you haven't had the service with us before, the stylist will look at your hair dry first to assess texture, density, and condition, then ask about your home routine and what you're hoping to walk out with.
The service itself begins with a clarifying shampoo to strip product buildup. The smoothing solution is applied section by section, then left to process. Next comes a careful blowdry to roughly eighty percent dry, followed by flat-ironing each section at the right temperature to seal in the treatment. The final step is a rinse and a finishing blowdry.
Aftercare matters. We send every client home with specific instructions: no ponytails, clips, or tucking hair behind your ears for the first three days. No washing for at least seventy-two hours. After that, switch to a sulfate-free, sodium-chloride-free shampoo. Regular shampoos will strip the treatment fast. We carry the right aftercare products in the salon and will walk you through which ones suit your hair.
Pairing With Your Color
A common question: can you do a Brazilian Blowout the same day as color? Yes, but the order matters. Color goes first, then the smoothing treatment. The heat from the flat iron actually helps seal the color in, and clients often notice their color looks shinier and richer after the treatment.
If you're already booked for a regrowth color, gloss, or balayage refresh, mention the smoothing treatment when you schedule so we can block enough time. Doing both in one visit is more efficient than two separate appointments.
Booking and Pricing
Pricing depends on hair length and density, which is why we don't quote a flat number over the phone. The consultation is part of how we get the price right for your hair. We have four stylist levels at Bokaos (Level 1, Level 2, Advanced, and Master), and the service is performed to the same precision standard whichever level you book.
Ready to Talk It Through?
If you've been on the fence about a Brazilian Blowout, the easiest next step is a quick consultation tailored to your hair. We'll look at your hair, ask about your routine, and tell you honestly whether this is the right service for you or whether something else (a botanical treatment, a Yuko perm, or just a better at-home routine) would serve you better. Call us at (626) 795-0500 or book a consultation online through our Pasadena location at 52 Hugus Alley.
