Why Your Hair Goes Flat by Noon (And What Actually Works to Fix It)
Share
Okay, real talk. Last Tuesday I had a client come in practically crying because her hair looked amazing when she left for work but was completely dead by her lunch meeting. Sound familiar?
I'm Hasblady from Bokaos Salon here in Pasadena, and honestly, this happens to pretty much everyone. Your hair isn't broken, it's just being hair. But after fifteen years behind the chair, I've picked up some tricks that actually work when you're stuck with sad, flat hair halfway through your day.
The Dry Shampoo Thing Everyone Gets Wrong
Here's what's wild, most people think dry shampoo is only for when your hair is greasy. Nope! I tell my clients to use it on clean hair too. It sounds backwards, but hear me out.
When your hair is freshly washed, it's almost too soft and slippery to hold any style. A little dry shampoo at the roots gives it some grip and texture. I learned this from my colleague Nicole when I was complaining about my own fine hair always falling flat after an hour.
Just don't go crazy with it. Light dusting, not a snowstorm.
The Lazy Girl's Volume Trick
This one's embarrassing because it's so simple, but flipping your part to the other side instantly lifts everything up at the crown. Your hair gets comfortable growing in one direction, so when you switch it up, it naturally wants to stand taller.
I discovered this by accident when I was running late one morning and parted my hair wrong. Looked in the mirror and thought, "Huh, that actually looks better." Been using it with clients ever since.
If you want it to stay put, hit it with some hairspray, but honestly, sometimes the messy, lived-in look is better anyway.
Teasing Without Looking Like It's 1985
Okay, I know "teasing" sounds scary, but I'm not talking about the big hair our moms did. Just take a fine-tooth comb and gently backcomb a tiny section at your crown. The key word is gently, you're adding cushion, not creating knots that'll take forever to brush out.
My client Sarah was terrified to try this at first because she thought she'd look ridiculous. Now she does it every morning. The trick is stopping before you think you need to, a little goes a long way.
The Five-Minute Blow-Dry Reset
If you've got a few minutes and access to a blow-dryer (even in your office bathroom, no judgment), you can totally revive flat hair. I just focus on the crown area with a round brush, blast it with heat, then immediately hit it with cool air to set everything.
Fair warning though, use some kind of heat protection first. I've seen too many clients fry their hair trying to touch up their style without it. Not worth the damage for a little volume.
Making Flat Hair Look Intentional
Sometimes flat hair just happens, and instead of fighting it, work with it. A tiny drop of hair oil or shine spray can make flat hair look sleek and intentional instead of just... sad.
I keep a little bottle of lightweight oil in my purse because even as a stylist, my hair has bad days. One drop warmed between your palms and lightly smoothed over everything makes such a difference.
Real Life in Pasadena
Look, I get it. Whether you're rushing between meetings downtown or spending the day at the Huntington with the kids, your hair needs to cooperate with actual life, not just look good for Instagram.
That's why at Bokaos (we're in Old Pasadena at One Colorado Square), we don't just focus on how your hair looks when you walk out. We want to make sure it behaves for your real day, the school pickup, the grocery run, the unexpected dinner plans.
Because honestly? Great hair isn't about being perfect. It's about looking like yourself, just better.
